Austria continues to maintain border controls with Slovenia and Hungary. As the Ministry of the Interior announced on Saturday, the checks will initially last another six months after November 11.
Austria is also currently carrying out checks at the borders with the Czech Republic and Slovakia. At all other borders there are “intensive controls in the area close to the border”.
“Border controls are an important instrument for the police to consistently combat human trafficking and asylum abuse. In the current situation, the checks are also an important measure to take action against terrorism,” said Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner (ÖVP). As long as the protection of the external borders does not work and the Schengen system is broken, this measure will be necessary.
Meanwhile, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Slovenia and Germany have also expanded their previously introduced border controls. Austria has been carrying out border controls with Slovenia and Hungary since 2015.
