According to Councilor for Animal Welfare Michael Lindner, stricter rules will soon apply for heavier and larger four-legged friends in Upper Austria. Meanwhile, after the most recent bite attack in Eidenberg in the Mühlviertel, the owner’s shepherd was taken from her.
“It is clear that a Maltese is potentially less dangerous than a German Shepherd.” With this argument, State Councilor Michael Lindner (SPÖ) for Animal Welfare wants to propose a “40/20 rule” in the state parliament in November: for dogs that have more than 40 centimeters at the withers (from the feet to the shoulders) or that are heavier than 20 kilograms, stricter rules should apply.
Lindner also wants to introduce a dog permit. An additional driver’s license is required for large dogs. It is still unclear exactly what this should look like. And the proposals are not yet final in any case, because ultimately the other parties must also agree.
ÖVP request to the State Council
The ÖVP is moving too slowly towards the new law on dog ownership. Because Lindner is unwilling to move from talking behind closed doors to taking action, the ÖVP wants to ask the responsible state council about the current status through a verbal request during the upcoming session of the state parliament.
Shepherd removed
What is now clear is what happens next to the shepherd responsible for the latest bite attack discovered by the “Krone”: the dog that bit a jogger (55) in Eidenberg on Monday and left her in hospital was the owner removed. (69).
According to the mayor’s order, this should actually have happened on Wednesday, but the district administration of the Urfahr area (BH) did not find the dog at home. At the request of the authorities, the owner took her four-legged friend to the animal shelter the next day, the BH said.
