Chinese researchers have created a chimeric baby monkey with glowing green fingertips and emerald green eyes. However, after ten days the animal had to be euthanized.
As the trade magazine “Cell” reports, it is a chimera. The term comes from Greek mythology and refers to hybrid creatures.
The stem cells of another monkey of the same species were implanted into the embryo of a cynomolgus monkey. A female then carried the embryo to term.
Must be used for medicine
To find out how many stem cells were inherited from the original embryo, the genes were previously manipulated with a fluorescent protein. That’s why the monkey boy’s fingers glowed neon green and his eyes were emerald green.
According to the researchers, the experimental work will benefit medical research and the protection of endangered species, CNN reports.
One of the scientists, co-author of the study Miguel Esteban, explained: “It is encouraging that our live-born monkey chimera made a large contribution (of stem cells) to the brain, suggesting that this approach may actually be valuable for modeling of neurodegenerative diseases. .”
Euthanized after ten days
According to him, monkey chimeras could also have “conservation value if they could be realized between two types of non-human primate species, one of which is threatened with extinction,” he added.
According to reports, the green-eyed primate baby was not viable. After ten days it had to be euthanized.
