Four months after Russian President Vladimir Putin, among others, partially suspended the Austrian-Russian agreement to avoid double taxation, the federal government in Vienna has now taken the same step.
The Russian president justified the measure, which in addition to the agreement with Austria also affected similar agreements with 37 other states, with “necessary immediate measures in connection with unfriendly actions of a number of states towards the Russian Federation.”
However, provisions affecting individuals still apply. The Russian business media “The Bell” therefore noted at the time that Putin had implemented a soft version of the proposals of the Russian Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs, which had already called for the freezing of double tax treaties with “unfriendly” states in the US. Putin: Russia has become stronger after two years of war
Despite the enormous sanctions and massive support for Ukraine, Kremlin leader Putin again regards his country as a ‘great power’ on the world stage after almost two years of war. “We have become stronger,” Putin said recently in a video message at the meeting of the so-called World Council of the Russian People, an organization under the auspices of the Russian Orthodox Church.
He also highlighted Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territories, which was internationally condemned as a violation of international law, as a success. Modern Russia has regained and consolidated “its sovereignty as a world power,” Putin said. In contrast, he sees the West as economically weakened and isolated on the international stage. Putin once again accused the West of wanting to sow misery and chaos in Russia by seeking dominance in order to collapse the world’s largest country in terms of area. Such attempts are doomed to failure.
