The Ministry of Defense is increasing its focus on regional and seasonal food when catering to army personnel and soldiers. The daily allowance will be increased from five to 6.50 euros.
“In this way, we will continue to ensure that more regional and seasonal food ends up on the barracks tables in the future,” emphasizes Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP). There are 90 catering facilities in the Federal Army throughout Austria. With the focus on regional food, we are also taking action for the climate – “shorter transport routes protect the environment,” says Tanner.
The daily “climate record”
In addition, the ‘Climate Plate’ project has ensured more regionality, sustainability and quality since 2021. In 2022, approximately 20 percent of the total of 2.4 million lunches would be served as a climate-friendly menu. Since 2023, the ‘Climate Board’ has been offered as a daily lunch menu. The army hands out an average of 20,000 portions every week.
