National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) condemns ‘messing up’ and working on criminal charges in politics. He speaks of a dangerous development.
It is a small success for Wolfgang Sobotka, which gives him a personal boost. This is noticeable in the background discussion for journalists. At the end of December, the sixth complaint against the chairman of the National Council in this legislature was withdrawn by the Public Prosecution Service. The background is a position that was filled in 2017. Andrea Jelinek is said to have failed to become deputy director of the Vienna Regional Police because, according to the suspicion at the time, she was seen as having a close connection with the SPÖ. Sobotka was Minister of the Interior at the time. Franz Eigner, who is close to the ÖVP, got the job. This was also the first place, Sobotka said. The reason for the investigation into this case was a complaint from Peter Pilz.
Denies Schmid’s allegations
Sobotka now feels confirmed why he is “not leaving office” despite calls to resign. The use of advertisements as a political weapon worries him: “I think this is an absolutely dangerous development in politics.” ‘Sharing’ someone not only damages the reputation of the person being prejudiced, but also the office. Political parties would benefit from this. Confidence in politics is suffering and there are hardly any candidates for political office anymore. Politics must be made with substance.
The investigations that Thomas Schmid started with his statement are still ongoing. According to Schmid’s report, Sobotka intervened with him during a tax audit of the Erwin Pröll Foundation, which the chairman of the National Council denies as “far-fetched”.
Candidacy is still unclear
He hopes to expand the rights of the suspect during this legislature and wants to argue for a real name requirement in the digital space. He does not yet know whether he will participate in the elections for the National Council. “I’ll cross the bridge when he gets there.”
In a broadcast on Friday, the Freedom Party again called for Sobotka’s resignation and pointed out the outstanding accusations against him, for example from the ‘Pilnacek recordings’.
