“There has never been less trust than now in Austrian politics and in the entire system,” says “Krone” journalist Teresa Spari in a detailed preview and overview of domestic policy with Jürgen Winterleitner on krone.tv.
Both the trial surrounding ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and the dramatic decline of Signa Holding will likely have an impact on the upcoming National Council elections: “People assume that everyone is equally corrupt. This is a great opportunity for new parties and also a little for the FPÖ,” says Teresa Spari, head of the “Krone News Desk”.
Topics such as inflation, a shortage of doctors and the bankruptcy of Signa Holding currently dominate Austrian domestic politics. The new U committees that will start soon could influence the National Council elections, Spari said. A lot has happened in Austria and worldwide since the last National Council elections in 2019. “Perhaps more than in any previous legislative period.”
Nowadays everything is different
The 2019 elections took place shortly after the publication of the Ibiza video. Teresa Spari analyzes: “The FPÖ was massively punished for this video by former party leader Heinz-Christian Strache and lost almost ten percent. The SPÖ achieved its historically worst result under then party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner. And the ÖVP had the miracle (note from Sebastian) Kurz and then flew absolutely high.”
According to Spari, smaller political forces such as the KPÖ could also play a role in the upcoming elections: “We saw last year in various state elections that the KPÖ, for example, can be very successful.” Spar speaks of a certain mood of protest. among voters as a possible election motive Voters: “This ‘I want something new.’ I will choose the one that hasn’t disappointed me yet.”
First stalemate in Austrian history?
From Teresa Spari’s point of view, the only realistic coalition variants are two-party coalition variants with the FPÖ: “Based on the surveys, the numbers are no different at the moment.” But now many are ruling out a coalition with Herbert Kickl’s FPÖ. . “No one knows at this point how this will end. It really could be that for the first time in Austrian history we are in a stalemate where no one wants to play with anyone and no one can work with anyone.”
“Kickl doesn’t give up without a fight”
Kickl operated alone from the second row for a long time and did a lot of strategy work. “But you shouldn’t forget: as Minister of the Interior he also discovered his love for power. And you notice more and more how comfortable he feels in the crowd and how he likes to be at the front and in the foreground,” says Spari, when asked about possible FPÖ government variants without Herbert Kickl as frontman. And she adds: “I can’t imagine at this point that he will give up so easily and without a fight. Especially since the FPÖ’s victory is clearly his. He managed to get the FPÖ out of the crisis after Strache.”
