A misstep cost the life of a 68-year-old in Lower Austria. The Hungarian fell over a twenty-meter high rock wall while skiing. He was fatally injured.
Tragic leisure accident in the Mostviertel: a 68-year-old Hungarian was on open ground late Monday afternoon on his way from the Hochkar piste towards Lassing. In the so-called Königsgraben, however, winter sports enthusiasts took off their skis to descend on foot through a forest.
20 meters of slope overlooked
Due to the snow and the approaching dusk, the man must have missed a slope: he fell about 20 meters! According to the Lower Austrian police, the Hungarian was fatally injured. All help came too late for the 68-year-old.
Challenging circumstances
Shortly after the mountain rescue team found the victim, the nighttime, strenuous rescue operation began using an akja and a tow rope, together with the Alpine Police. “Many thanks to our mountain rescuers, who immediately started looking for the man during this nighttime search operation under challenging conditions,” emphasizes Thomas Zwettler, head of the Göstling mountain rescue service.
The victim was eventually brought to the valley late in the evening. There were 16 comrades from the Göstling mountain rescue service, including rescue dogs and dog handlers, and three Alpine police officers present.
