Harald Waiglein was confirmed as chairman of the EU Financial Services Committee (FSC) on Friday. It is the third time that he has been appointed for two years, the Ministry of Finance announced on Saturday. Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) spoke of “a personal award for Waiglein’s work and expertise”.
“On the other hand, the re-election of Harald Waiglein (…) also confirms the excellent reputation of the Austrian tax authorities. Austria thus continues to be a key player in European economic policy,” Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) said in a broadcast. Waiglein has been a department head at the Ministry of Finance since 2012 and now remains chairman of the EU Financial Services Committee (FSC).
Monthly meeting committee
This is a monthly meeting of the EU Council, which is made up of senior representatives from the Member States, the European Commission, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the EU’s regulatory committees (e.g. the European Banking Authority). “A strong, stable financial sector is the backbone of a functioning economy. The FSC is committed to a strong European financial sector and has overcome major challenges here in the past, for example related to Covid-19. I have no doubt that we will also face the current challenges, for example related to the war in Ukraine,” Waiglein says confidently.
Waiglein has been chairman since 2018 and contributes to strategic considerations in the financial services industry. He will continue to deal with important internal and external issues. His other positions, in addition to those of the Treasury, are chairman of the board of directors of the European Financial Stability Facility and of the Risk Committee of the European Stability Mechanism.
