As with the ÖVP, the first two elections of this year’s super elections did not go very well for the NEOS. The Pink Party was expelled from the Innsbruck city council and in the city of Salzburg it lost a third of its voters and has only one mandate. In 2023, the NEOS missed the return to the Salzburg state parliament. The ‘Krone’ investigated why the liberals are not nervous about the upcoming elections for the EU and the National Council.
In principle, the causes and starting situation for the election defeats are different for the NEOS than for the People’s Party. In Innsbruck the party strategists see no mistakes in their own party. The poor performance was the result of elections in the Tyrolean capital coming to a head over the mayoral issue between the Greens’ incumbent Georg Willi, ÖVP rebel Johannes Anzengruber and FPÖ candidate Markus Lassenberger. In this mixed situation, the Pinks simply couldn’t get through, several insiders say.
