On Labor Day, the communists sang with union members

Date:

Red union members and SPÖ leaders used Salzburg’s Labor Day celebrations to make campaign tones and swipes at the Chamber of Commerce.

The most important question at the May Day celebration of the red union members was quickly clarified. “The chickens have thawed,” head trade unionist Michael Huber announced with relief. During last year’s May Festival there were problems with the delivery of grilled chicken. After the political speeches, a long line quickly formed in front of the Hendlgriller.

In the speeches on Labor Day, the SPÖ politicians set different priorities. Bernhard Auinger was happy that he could celebrate May 1 for the first time as red mayor of the city of Salzburg. AK President Peter Eder focused on his role as a social partner and spoke to business representatives in view of the working time discussion. “The Chamber of Commerce has already succumbed to populism. If she accuses the workers of being lazy, it makes me feel hot, regardless of the temperature,” said Eder, referring to the debate surrounding indirect labor costs.

SPÖ leader David Egger in election campaign mode
National councilor Michaela Schmidt and party leader David Egger were already back in campaign mode and arrived in Neumarkt 30 minutes late due to his mayoral obligations. “The debate over working hours is just a taste of what Austrians would expect under a right-wing Europe and a blue-black federal government. I am convinced that we will be successful in the National Council elections,” said Egger. “We are still a long way from achieving our goal,” Schmidt said, referring to the National Council elections. As the red speeches came to an end, the May 1 demonstration also arrived on the festival grounds in front of the Chamber of Labor.

The “Internationale” with support from the KPÖ
The KPÖ Plus was in charge of organizing this, but the SPÖ and Bürgerlist, as well as other red and green organizations, also called for participation. Nearly 600 demonstrators marched from the central station via the Chamber of Labor to Lehen. The future city council partners Auinger, Kay-Michael Dankl and Anna Schiester celebrated May 1 together, at least briefly. Communist demonstrators then sang the “Internationale” together with the red union members.
