In recent years of crisis, Europe has fallen behind politically and economically. The SPÖ is now proposing a “Europe first” pact for growth, jobs and security of supply in the EU election campaign. The Social Democrats obviously do not want to make this comparison, but their proposal is strikingly reminiscent of Donald Trump’s America First policy.
The European Commission must create a legal basis that ensures that European companies are given priority in public tenders in the future, Schieder said in an interview with the ‘Krone’. He reminds us that Europe is currently dependent on imports, especially from China, for the production of medicines.
Europe is lagging behind in many areas
Schieder said that Europe has also failed in recent years to implement innovative industrial and location policies in the field of key technologies. Here too, production and knowledge were moved to China. 85 percent of all solar panels worldwide are produced in China.
“If Europe wants to become competitive in the medium term, some measures need to be implemented urgently. The aim is to make Europe a top industrial location and a leading labor market again by investing in the production of strategic goods,” demands the SPÖ EU parliamentarian.
The red suggestions in detail:
– Build production facilities for sustainable technology
– Promoting green jobs: promoting knowledge and know-how in future technologies through special training and measures to qualify workers for future jobs
– Make public investments in key technologies
– Financial support to introduce sustainable energy across the board
“Without a change of course, the welfare state is in danger”
“We want ‘Europe first’ instead of ‘Made in China’! This means that we must prioritize investments in Europe so that we can create the jobs of the future here – and not in Asia. The US and China are passing us by and we are losing contact. This endangers our European model of the welfare state,” Schieder warns.
