The online voting decision aid wahlkabine.at will be continued. In October, those responsible discontinued the tool for financial reasons. A new association has now been established, including SOS Children’s Villages and the Association of Austrian Adult Education Centers (VÖV).
“Some start-up financing” will be provided, according to VÖV Secretary General John Evers. “However, this is something we cannot guarantee permanently.” wahlkabine.at is therefore still dependent on donations.
This year the adult learning centers focus on democracy, and the science-based voting booth makes people want to participate, which goes together well. SOS Children’s Villages is committed to the rights of children and the right to participation, explains Birgit Schatz of the human rights organization. Politicians do not see the needs of young people as they should.
Special attention is paid to first-time voters
wahlkabine.at aims to be a broad, accessible educational offering before the elections, especially for young people and new voters. The project started during the 2002 National Council elections. Since then, the high editorial effort, scientific quality standards, data protection and independence have not changed. Each issue requires several months of work. So far, an editorial team and political scientists have been involved.
The orientation tool asks users questions and provides possible answers. The degree of agreement with each individual campaigning party is then calculated. For example, this requires that the editors know the positions of parties on various topics.
