According to the first forecast for the European elections, the European People’s Party (EPP) is clearly in first place in the European Parliament, despite the gains made by the right-wing populist parties: it therefore has 181 mandates and no major losses.
They are followed by the Social Democrats with 135 MPs, according to a trend calculation by the EU Parliament on Sunday. The liberal Renew remains in third place, ahead of the national-conservative European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).
This means that the three largest factions hardly retain an absolute majority. The Renew therefore has 82 MPs, ahead of the EKR with 71. The far-right ‘Identity and Democracy’ gets mandates, the Greens lose. According to the forecast, ID will have 62 MPs, the Greens 53. The group of non-attached MPs, which unites many MPs from the right-wing fringe, will initially be strong: it will have 102 seats. The Left came last with 34 MPs.
The results will be published shortly after 11 p.m
The first general predictions for the composition of the EU Parliament are based on predictions for eleven EU countries (exit polls) and on pre-election surveys in the other sixteen Member States. The general forecast expected before 9:15 PM will already be based on 15 Member States. The results will only be published when all polling stations throughout Europe are closed. This is expected to happen shortly after 11 p.m. The last polling stations have closed in Italy. About 360 million Europeans have elected 720 new Members of the European Parliament since Thursday. This is 15 more than in the previous parliament with 705.
