Funeral service in Vienna – Former Chancellor Bierlein is buried today

Today Austria says goodbye to former Chancellor Brigitte Bierlein, who died on June 3. The funeral service for the first female chancellor and the first female president of the Constitutional Court begins in St. Stephen’s Cathedral and ends in Vienna’s Central Cemetery.

The coffin was liturgically brought to the cathedral at 6:45 am and laid there. The public can say goodbye there until 10 a.m. Cardinal Christoph Schönborn Requiem will conduct the requiem for Bierlein, who died unexpectedly eleven days ago.

Bierlein’s successor as VfGH president, Christoph Grabenwarter, will also speak. Anyone who cannot attend will have the opportunity to follow the fair live via ORF2. The musical accompaniment to the Requiem comes from the Vienna Philharmonic.

Head of state at funeral ceremonies
Bierlein will then be buried in Vienna’s Central Cemetery. The entire head of state will participate in the funeral ceremonies planned by, among others, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP).

The funeral procession and burial will begin at 2:45 p.m. in a grave of honor at the Vienna Central Cemetery. The funeral service there will be led by the spiritual advisor of the former Chancellor, the priest of Ober St. Veit, Father Stefan Reuffurth.
