The electoral system: two rounds

The elections to the National Assembly be solved in two rounds.

only those who get more than 12.5% of the votes in the first round They advance to the second round on June 19. If a candidate obtains more than 50% of the votes cast in that first round and represents at least 25% of the voters’ votes, he will of course immediately gain a seat in the Assembly. This requires a high level of participation, as abstinence hinders compliance with the second requirement. Therefore it is very difficult to get a seat from the first round and it is normal to go to the second round.

In the Second round, the candidate with the most votes becomes deputy. In case of a tie between two candidates, the oldest wins.

National Assembly, where laws are passed

Each five years the competent National Assembly to approve French laws is renewed. The term of a deputy’s term is thus five years, unless legislative power is interrupted by a dissolution of the National Assembly (Article 12 of the Constitution) and new elections are held. The mandate is renewable indefinitelythis means that a departing deputy can stand again and continue to be re-elected.

The french prime minister of the majority in the National Assembly. Therefore, the French President and Prime Minister may or may not be from the same party. Normally they were from the same party, but three times the president and prime minister have signed opposite signs: twice in the Mitterrand era and once with Chirac.

Until now, Macron’s party had the majority in the Assembly, making it easier for the French president to enforce his laws. It remains to be seen what the composition of the Assembly will now look like. And it is that the latest polls right now point to a tie between President Emmanuel Macron’s Ensemble (Batera) alliance and the left-wing coalition NUPES.
