At the suggestion of the Indian Prime Minister, a dinner will take place on Tuesday between Narendra Modi and Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP). The two heads of government “look forward to being able to exchange information privately”, the Chancellery announced on Friday.
Modi’s visit marks “a significant event in bilateral relations” and underscores “the shared responsibility for peace and stability in the world.” India is an “impressive country” as the world’s largest democracy. They want to “intensify economic ties.”
Modi will be in Vienna on Tuesday and Wednesday and will meet Nehammer and Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen.
India appreciates Austria’s neutrality and “sees Austria as an important partner in the international dialogue on geopolitical issues,” the chancellery added. The country also played a “special role” in the war in Ukraine. “Putin listens to them,” Nehammer said.
Modi also wants to meet Putin
Hindu nationalist Modi, who has headed his country’s government for a decade, wants to turn the world’s most populous country into an international political and economic heavyweight.
In both the war in Ukraine and the West’s economic conflicts with Russia and China, India generally takes a position of equidistance. In return, it gets Russian oil at a reasonable price. Modi is also traveling directly to Vienna from Moscow on Tuesday, where he plans to hold talks with President Vladimir Putin.
