The upcoming elections for the National Council will provide the Austrian population with a summer full of political encounters. Politicians from all parties will travel throughout Austria to attract votes. Nothing is left out: sports, dancing, eating and drinking. The “Krone” has an overview.
On Tuesday, Chancellor and ÖVP leader Karl Nehammer will begin his federal state tour, which will take him through Austria until early September. Nehammer will take part in numerous events and seek direct contact with the population. The current debate on the Islamist-terrorist threat and the death threat against the Chancellor will certainly also be a topic in these discussions.
Candidates have been on the road for weeks
Most of the top candidates have been touring the country since July. Nehammer also toured from mid-June to mid-July under the motto “Working for Austria”. This mayoral tour served primarily to mobilize his own civil servants.
Recently, the “Chancelor Match” raffled by the People’s Party was also held. On the occasion of the European Championship, the People’s Party raffled a football match against Nehammer. The match ended 4:3 for the team of the winners of the bets from Styria.
SPÖ leader Andreas Babler is going on a ‘With heart and brain’ tour. The SPÖ leader has his “plan for a better Austria” with him. The program includes visits to markets, summer festivals, church days and companies, but also distribution campaigns and press conferences on important topics such as strengthening the health care system or the SPÖ’s proposals for an affordable life. “I want to regain people’s trust through a policy that does not turn them into supplicants,” says Babler.
The heart of the tour is the ten “Andi Babler comes to you” events. These are large events with Babler at very special locations where the focus is on direct exchange about current questions and topics.
The FPÖ celebrates “customs and traditions”
The FPÖ has announced the “Heimatsommer”, a summer offensive with numerous events in all nine federal states, which consist of a colorful mix of culture, customs, tradition and cuisine. As the name suggests, it is mainly about the value of the home, which stands for “neutrality, sovereignty, self-determination, regionality, craftsmanship, family, security and connection”, explains FPÖ General Michael Schnedlitz.
The Greens send their four ministers Werner Kogler, Leonore Gewessler, Alma Zadić and Johannes Rauch. Each of them tries to get votes on different topics. Kogler should deal with the economic part and talk about a more sustainable industry.
For Zadić, the focus should be on issues such as strengthening democracy. Health Minister Rauch, who loves cooking, will do this for and with the public. His tour will often focus on food sovereignty. “But the main message is clear: if nature and the climate are important to you, vote on September 29. Green,” says party manager Olga Voglauer.
The top candidate of the NEOS, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, has been on tour with “Reformkraft” since August 6 until election day. In addition to events such as ‘NEOS@Home evenings’, regular tables, panel discussions, afterworks, school, company or beer tent visits are also planned.
Meinl-Reisinger confirms the government ambitions of the Pink Party. “We want to implement reforms that have been at a standstill for decades because governments of the ÖVP, SPÖ, FPÖ and the Greens were too courageous and lacked energy.”
