A heavy rain shower, which mainly came down above the central area with lightning and thunder, led to more than 60 calls from the fire brigade. One thing is extraordinary: the environmental alarm on the Krems river. White foam is floating here. The origin seems clear, but it is still uncertain whether it is dangerous.
At 7:00 p.m., the first alarms about “environmental use in water” were sent to the Nettingsdorf fire brigade and the paper factory fire brigade. The foam that is spreading over the Krems in Upper Austria is said to come from there. It bubbles up from a large tower; one observer describes the foam as “thick as shaving foam”.
Important question open
Currently, six fire departments are working to stop the spread and also to find out what the substance is. Whether it is toxic to the environment or breaks down easily. In any case, attempts are currently being made to stop the spread to keep the possible consequences as low as possible.
Thunderstorm cell over central area
The first flood operations after the temporary end of the heat wave began at 16:00 in Ansfelden, when a large thunderstorm cell moved from the southwest over the central area and dried up. Most of the operations involved flooded cellars and streets, but also fallen trees in Traun and Pasching. No injuries have been reported so far.
