Who’s Strange Here? – Trump Finds Himself and His Deputy “Extraordinarily Normal”

Date:

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has rejected accusations of being “weird.” Speaking at an engineering firm in the controversial Pennsylvania city of York, he said of himself and his deputy J.D. Vance: “I think we’re extraordinarily normal people.”

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz is the inventor of the label “weird” for former President Trump – roughly in German: weird, strange. Walz started it in an interview, and gradually all prominent figures in the party adopted the slogan.

Referring to Walz, Trump now said, “He’s weird.” Trump also joked about Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ laughter.

Trump wants to make the US capital “beautiful” again
In his speech, the Republican also promised to make the US capital Washington the most beautiful “capital in the world” if he were re-elected. Washington was “terribly dilapidated, covered in graffiti,” he said. He will “very quickly” restore order to the capital and make it safe.

Trump finds himself and his deputy “extraordinarily normal”:

Washington was once known as the “murder capital” of the United States because of its high crime rate. The number of murders in the US capital began to decline in the 1990s, but has risen significantly in recent years.

Trump repeats his favorite lie
In the rest of his speech, Trump – as so often – repeatedly lost the thread. He spread his favorite lie about the supposedly stolen 2020 election. The Republican attributed a “regulatory jihad” to his rival on energy policy. Harris wants to close nuclear power plants.

“Germany tried this a couple of years ago and got rid of its political leaders very quickly,” Trump said, apparently referring to Germany’s nuclear phaseout. He then falsely claimed, “And now they’re probably building 50 or 60 power plants, and they want to build a lot more.”

Close race expected
The Democratic Party conference begins Monday night (local time) in Chicago – US President Joe Biden will speak on Tuesday night Central European Time. Other party leaders, such as former President Barack Obama, will give speeches in the coming days. Harris will give the closing speech on Friday night. She will likely be in the spotlight for the coming days.

Trump is therefore relying on a counter-program and is touring the politically fiercely contested swing states. Additional events are planned in Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona, Georgia and Nevada. In Arizona, Trump wants to visit the American southern border with Mexico. The swing states are crucial for the outcome of the election; it is not clear in advance whether the Republican or Democratic candidate will win, as is traditional.
