Luger remains in office – Linz mayor survives confidence vote

Date:

The head of the city of Linz took the question of his political future into his own hands: In Lower Austria, the head of the Upper Austrian capital asked the Linz board of directors for the SPÖ vote of confidence. This was given to him unanimously, so Luger remains mayor.

The board of the Linz SPÖ met for several hours: party chairman Klaus Luger and the party’s executive committee invited people to the spa and wellness hotel Loisium in Langenlois on Wednesday to discuss the issues for the future. However, it has become a debate about the political future of mayor Klaus Luger. The SPÖ politician had publicly admitted that he had interfered in the application procedure for the directorship of the Brucknerhaus in Linz – the “Krone” reported on it.

ÖVP and other factions wanted Luger’s resignation
Linz parties such as the ÖVP openly called for the resignation of Luger, who has led the city since 2013. Black deputy mayor Martin Hajart explains why: “Luger lied to the people of Linz for months and presented himself as the great enlightener in the Brucknerhaus affair who did not allow himself to be guilty of anything. But exactly the opposite is the case, because it was he himself who put the questions to Kerschbaum in court.”

Criticism and calls for resignation also came from the other parties in the Linz city parliament. They say in unison: “Luger must now know what to do.”

From 5pm the party voted on the leader
The mayor took the issue of his political future into his own hands on Wednesday. At the meeting in Lower Austria, called the Summer Academy, he asked the question of trust. The meeting began at 2 p.m. in the beautiful seminar hotel and everyone locked themselves in. “Luger really deals with all questions very openly and in detail,” the “Krone” learned that afternoon in a text message from the meeting.

The SPÖ of Linz stands united behind Mayor Klaus Luger
At 5:42 p.m., SPÖ district manager Beate Gotthartsleitner confirmed: Luger will remain in office; the party board has unanimously expressed its confidence in him. SPÖ parliamentary group leader Stefan Giegler says: “This result clearly shows that the leaders of the Linz SPÖ are united behind Mayor Klaus Luger. He made a mistake, there is nothing to soften up for, but if you consider that Luger as city leader solved major problems such as the SWAP, set new priorities for a climate-neutral industry, modernized the stadium infrastructure and had outstanding contracts for decades, such as the one for the expansion of the audience. “In conclusion, this approval is also an appreciation for an overall assessment of the mayor’s commitment.”
