After the assassination attempt in mid-July, US presidential candidate Donald Trump appeared on an open-air stage for the first time. It was a speech behind bulletproof glass.
Before Trump and his vice presidential candidate, J.D. Vance, appeared in front of planes on display at an outdoor aviation museum, bulletproof glass was installed around the speaker’s podium. The Secret Service had advised Trump against appearing outdoors after the attack in Pennsylvania about a month ago. When an audience member was experiencing medical problems on Wednesday, he came out from behind the protective screen to check things out.
The Republican used the speech in the contested state of North Carolina on Wednesday to launch fresh attacks on his Democratic rival, US Vice President Kamala Harris. The 78-year-old complained in the small town of Asheboro that she was the “most radical leftist” ever to run for president, and portrayed Harris as a threat to jobs, prosperity and peace. If she were to win the presidential election on November 5, millions of jobs would “disappear overnight”. “Your lifelong savings will be completely destroyed,” the ex-president warned his supporters, adding: “If Comrade Kamala wins in November, it is almost certain that there will be World War III.”
barely survived the attack
At a campaign rally in the small town of Butler on July 13, Trump narrowly survived an attack, struck by a bullet in his right ear. One man in the audience was killed and two other rally attendees were seriously wounded. The suspected attacker, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by a Secret Service sniper.
Since then, Trump has appeared at a dozen indoor events. “We will not give up outdoor gatherings,” he assured supporters in Pennsylvania in late July. As is customary for security reasons, the Secret Service did not comment on the heightened security measures on Wednesday.
Trump’s appearance in what could be a decisive swing state was seen as a counter-program to the Democratic Party convention in Chicago, where Trump’s rival Harris will formally accept her nomination as the presidential candidate on Thursday. Her confirmation in a ceremonial vote was celebrated by Democrats as a party on Tuesday.
Biden decided not to run for office
The fact that US President Joe Biden decided not to run for re-election on 21 July and instead presented his 59-year-old deputy as Trump’s opponent, created momentum in favour of the Democrats. One problem for Trump is that Harris, like him, regularly draws more than 10,000 supporters at campaign events.
