EH Bildu has requested the appearance of Alberto MartinezMinister of Health of the Basque Government, to explain the situation emergency from Osakidetza in light of the “increasingly serious” events which, “as expected”, have had particularly serious consequences for both staff and citizens in an emergency situation this summer.
The coalition recalled that it had warned against the ‘precarious’ emergency situation and the consequences this would entail, and calls for a ‘radical change in the management model’. He criticizes the lack of strategy or project, to which was added in the past year the decision to reduce the number of doctors in the coordination centers or to operate ambulances without doctors.
“Unfortunately, the Basque citizens have suffered the consequences in recent years. We have also made several proposals to address the current management model, but so far PNV and PSE-EE have refused to change that management model,” he stressed. Rebeka UberaMember of Parliament of EH Bildu.
In a press release, the coalition reported “very serious situations”, including the death of a man in Llodio (Álava), on August 22, after an ambulance without a doctor was sent to treat him when he suffered an acute heart attack. According to EH Bildu, after a “confrontation” between the doctor of the Llodio PAC and the doctor of the coordination center, the advanced life support ambulance from Bilbao finally arrived. “In the end, it took more than 40 minutes to reach the patient”, who “died after 3 hours.”
The coalition also criticizes the situation of privately managed ambulances, dependent on the Ministry of Health, where it is “very common for ambulances with nurses to be out of service” because companies “do not want to cover victims”.
“Not only is the Emergency Management Directorate unable to plug the existing gaps, but when health workers are faced with these situations, they do not receive adequate protocol from the Directorate, nor any form of legal or clinical security. Therefore, if the workers are in this situation, imagine what the citizens are like,” Ubera adds.
