According to President Joe Biden, the US administration is working on releasing long-range weapons supplied by the US to Ukraine for attacks on Russian territory. According to insiders, the US is close to an agreement on the delivery of such weapons to Ukraine. Further details are expected to be agreed during a visit to Kiev by the foreign ministers of the US and Britain.
In essence, it involves the use of American-made ATACMS artillery rockets and British Storm Shadow missiles. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wanted to examine with his counterpart before his trip to London how best to support Ukraine in the current situation. They wanted to report this to their bosses before their meeting on Friday. US President Joe Biden will then receive British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Washington. A meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and senior government officials is planned in Kyiv, according to the US State Department.
The trip comes at a critical time for Ukraine, Blinken said. Russia is intensifying its aggression against civilians, key infrastructure and the Ukrainian military. “We are seeing the country escalate its attacks on cities, people and especially energy infrastructure as we approach the cold months,” the US secretary of state said.
Republicans are calling for restrictions to be lifted
Until now, the US has limited the use of its weapons against Russia to defending the Russian offensive against the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. But Ukraine has long been asking for permission to use long-range, American-made weapons against targets far beyond Russia’s borders. This is the only way to hit Russian military airfields, from which fighter jets take off to drop glider bombs or fire missiles. These have hit major cities like Kharkiv, but also Ukrainian frontline trenches. In Washington, several Republican politicians wrote to President Biden calling on him to lift the restrictions.
The Netherlands allows use
Just a few days ago, the Netherlands came out of hiding. “Ukraine may use our weapons on Russian territory to defend itself in accordance with international law,” Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans told the “FAZ” on Monday. At the same time, he encouraged other Western countries to lift restrictions on the use of weapons supplied by them. Ukraine has the right to self-defense, Brekelmans said.
