Excitement over flyer campaigns by young communists in Carinthia: the youth organization advertises for educational institutions, which is actually prohibited.
There are only nine days left until the National Council elections – and the election campaign is entering its hot phase. In order to achieve the best possible result for their party, “Young Left” (KPÖ) in Carinthia specifically targeted the student group of voters. As they proudly published on Instagram, they went to various schools in Carinthia and “flew” along the educational institutions.
But anyone who has ever had to deal with the School Education Act knows that it is strictly forbidden to distribute flyers or other advertising material for a party on school grounds.
It is therefore not surprising that the campaign of the young KPÖ members was not well received. Not only were some activists removed from the site, there were even complaints, as confirmed by education director Isabella Penz.
Legal grey area
But anyone who thinks that ignorance is the culprit here is mistaken. Klagenfurt district spokesman Markus Teichmann is well aware of the balancing act of the school flyer campaign: “We only fly flyers on public property in front of schools.” However, one or two photos on social media suggest otherwise: “Occasionally real estate Boundaries on school property are difficult to recognize,” the statement reads. But in general, the question remains whether such gray areas should really be exploited in the battle for young voters.
