Riots after Derby – Minister Kogler calls for stricter stadium bans

“This criminal activity must finally be stopped before more people are injured, before football suffers even more damage,” Vice Chancellor and Sports Minister Werner Kogler (Greens) said on Monday. He was “both shocked and outraged” by the incidents that took place on Sunday evening at the Allianz Arena in Hütteldorf.

As reported, three visitors and ten police officers were injured. The two fan camps threw pyrotechnics at each other. It was said that nothing was found during official tours and searches of stadium guests. In total, at least 577 reports have been filed in connection with the Vienna Derby Rapid against Austria.

“I expect those responsible for the club to ensure that all those responsible for fireworks and pyrotechnic attacks on a family sector and other acts that are dangerous to the public are held accountable where possible,” Kogler said. “One of the inevitable measures must be – and I agree with the demands of the Vienna police – the more rigorous use of stadium bans. It would certainly also be worthwhile to exclude visiting fans from the Vienna derbies until further notice. This senseless aggression and the willingness to use violence in the stadium must come to an end!”

ORF board member Peter Westenthaler, who was a board member of the Bundesliga, recommends looking at England. There are “actually life sentences” for “the hooligans and noisy brothers”. This should also happen in Austria. “How is it possible that fans stream onto the pitch and fight with each other for minutes? “And how do the fireworks even get into the stadiums?” he asked, referring to the security measures.
