Following increased Israeli attacks on targets, the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia has taken action. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has pledged his support for Lebanon and other “Arab brothers” – thus seeing himself on the side of “justice.”
“We are closely monitoring developments in the region, in particular the recent explosion of communications equipment in Lebanon, and firmly oppose indiscriminate attacks against civilians,” he said during a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib in New York on Tuesday.
“No matter how the situation develops, we will always stand on the side of justice, on the side of our Arab brothers, including Lebanon,” Wang affirmed. Fighting violence with counterforce will not solve the problems in the Middle East and will lead to “an even greater humanitarian catastrophe,” he added.
Devastating wave of attacks by Israel
Nearly 500 people were killed and more than 1,600 wounded in Israeli strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon on Monday, the Lebanese government said. The Israeli military said it struck more than 1,600 targets to destroy military assets belonging to the pro-Iranian Shiite militia Hezbollah. A “large number” of Hezbollah members were killed.
The conflict had already reached a fever pitch last week when hundreds of militia beepers and walkie-talkies exploded in Lebanon. Hezbollah blamed Israel for the explosions. Israel itself did not comment on the author of the explosions, which killed 39 people and wounded thousands more.
