A day before his reception at the White House, US presidential candidate Donald Trump attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi head-on. The Republican threw around figures and described the head of state as a profiteer.
Zelensky is refusing to make a “deal” to end the war despite billions in U.S. payments, Trump said Wednesday during a campaign appearance in North Carolina. Zelensky is “probably the greatest businessman in the world.” “Every time he came to our country, he brought $60 billion.”
“Things are going very well” with Putin
“We continue to give billions of dollars to a man who refuses to make a deal, Zelensky,” the former US president said. The question is: what is left for Ukraine? “The country is completely wiped out.” Trump boasted that he “got along very well with Putin.”
Trump’s comments in the video:
Trump feels insulted by Zelensky
Zelensky is currently in the US to lobby Western allies for further support for his country in the war against Russia, which has been going on for more than two and a half years. On Wednesday, Zelenskyy spoke at the UN general debate in New York and on Thursday he will be received in Washington by US President Joe Biden and Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
A meeting between Zelensky and Trump also seemed planned, but has now apparently not happened. American media reported that Trump was bothered by an interview with the Ukrainian president in which he said that the 78-year-old Republican “doesn’t really know how to stop the war”.
What happens if Trump wins?
Trump, a longtime sharp critic of the US’s billions in aid to Ukraine, had repeatedly boasted that if re-elected he would end the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours.” Zelensky said in his speech to the UN General Assembly that Ukrainians would never agree to an externally imposed deal with Russia.
In April, the US Congress approved $61 billion (€54.79 billion) in military aid to Ukraine. However, the Republican Party had previously blocked the money for months at the insistence of its presidential candidate. If Trump wins the November 5 election against Democratic candidate Harris, Kiev fears that the US will no longer be its main supporter.
