As the turquoise-green federal government is on its last legs, one last important appointment is likely to be made. As announced on Tuesday, constitutional judge Helmut Hörtenhuber will step down at the end of this year.
The government must fill a new judge position at the Constitutional Court (VfGH). Constitutional judge Hörtenhuber will leave office at the end of 2024, as the Constitutional Court announced on its website on Tuesday.
Chancellor has already let us know
The 65-year-old Upper Austrian has been a member of the Constitutional Court since 2008 and previously worked as director of the state parliament. The chairman of the VfGH has already informed Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) that the position has become vacant.
Firstly, this needs to be advertised. The federal government then has the right to propose new appointments. The current black-green coalition could also come into play, which – as long as no new one has been found – could remain in power until the end of the year.
With Verena Madner, a candidate with the green ticket was appointed as a constitutional judge for the first time in the current legislature.
