A central point in the ‘victory plan’ drawn up by Ukrainian leaders is NATO’s invitation to Ukraine to join ‘now’, as President Volodymyr Zelensky demands. But the military alliance cannot be forced into premature expansion.
At a press conference on Wednesday in Brussels, the new NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte referred to the decisions of the recent NATO summit in Washington. In this case, the proponents of a quick invitation could not achieve victory over opponents such as the US and Germany.
The only common denominator was to reassure Ukraine in general that the country could no longer be held back on its path to the defense alliance. At the same time, the summit statement explicitly emphasized once again that a formal invitation to join cannot be issued until all allies agree and all admission conditions are met. This includes reforms in the areas of democracy and the economy, but also in the field of the security sector.
NATO Secretary General: “Putin has nothing to say”
Opponents of a NATO invitation to Ukraine also fear that such a move could lead to a further escalation of the war in Ukraine. However, Rutte emphasized on Wednesday that Russia and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin had no say or veto in the discussion.
