The sovereigntist coalition has filed a motion seeking clarification on the Guggenheim Urdaibai project, which has not gone ahead. Finally, the Basque Parliament has supported the opening of a listening process in Busturialdea on the viability of the project.
EH Bildu has asked the PNV and the PSE-EE whether the listening process for the Guggenheim Urdaibai project is real or already starting “with a clear ending”.
The plenary session of the Basque Parliament debated on Thursday the motion defended by EH Bildu to ask the Basque government to clarify its plans for Busturialdea, which did not go through as the Sumar and PP amendments.
By EH BilduParliamentarian Oihane Etxebarrieta has warned that this listening process “cannot begin with a clear ending,” which is why she has pointed out that her coalition “will not allow that process to be used to legitimize a single project.”
He has emphasized that we must “start from scratch” in this process and deal with it “apart from the Guggenheim”, which he has positioned himself against, while drawing attention to the disagreements between the parties that make up the Basque government in about this issue, which makes it even more complicated to have “clarity” around this initiative.
The parliamentarian of PNV Irune Zuloaga has defended that the Guggenheim Urdaibai is a “good idea, a driving factor” with “a lot of potential”, but that if it goes ahead “it will not be like the one in Bilbao, but something different”, as it would be located in a biosphere reserve with a high degree of protection. He also pointed out that an inter-institutional working group is already working on designing a “listening and dialogue process” that will start “without much delay”.
For its part, Estíbaliz Canto del PSE-EE He has made it clear that any project must respect the level of environmental protection of the area, he has specified that his party will not focus on a “project about which much has been read but very little has been made concrete” and he has indicated that the Socialists believe not “in political apriorisms”.
Finally, the Basque Parliament rejected EH Bildu’s motion, while supporting the opening of a listening process regarding the promotion of the Busturialdea region, in which the viability of the Guggenheim Urdaibai will be discussed with the support of the PNV and the PSE -EE.
