The Italian government is having difficulty implementing its plans to accommodate refugees from the Mediterranean. The first twelve migrants taken to a reception center in Albania were repatriated.
An Italian court declared the transfer unlawful, citing a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The Italian government subsequently drew up an official list of ‘safe countries’, which now also includes Egypt and Bangladesh.
Now a new attempt is being made to bring migrants to refugee centers in Albania. From Monday, the Italian naval ship “Libra” will patrol 30 kilometers from Lampedusa. Only adult men from countries considered safe are allowed to be brought to the camps.
300 employees on site
The Albanian refugee centers have been empty for two weeks, but are staffed by almost 300 employees. This includes, for example, cleaning staff, translators, medical and nursing staff and security guards. Italian opposition parties are already complaining about the high costs. The police officers should live in four and five star hotels with a private beach.
The two countries’ governments agreed to build the camps a year ago, and they finally opened a few weeks ago (see video above). Human rights organizations criticize the agreement, other governments are continuing the controversial plan. Other right-wing governments could use it as a model.
Asylum seekers from Bangladesh and Syria
Since the beginning of the year, 55,049 people have arrived in Italy after a sea voyage across the Mediterranean, a decrease compared to previous years. According to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, most asylum seekers come from Bangladesh, Syria, Tunisia and Egypt.
