“The surveys before and during the American elections were way wrong,” says political and social expert Tatjana Lackner in the live talk of krone.tv. The moral claim ‘you’re the bad guys, we’re the good guys’ no longer works. This is a philosophy from the 1970s.
“It was a moral campaign and that no longer works here in Austria,” said Lackner. Despite the funereal mood in some parts of Europe, we now have to think about how to deal with this situation. Yet it is of course strange to many Europeans that a convicted criminal becomes president.
Tatjana Lackner sees the immigration issue as an issue that was crucial to Trump’s re-election. “The migration issue was Harris’s responsibility, even though she was actually vice president.” This major sore point was central to many voters, so it doesn’t help that Harris was the more elegant orator.
“It seems we are experiencing a final rebirth of the old white men,” Lackner concludes. “Everyone makes sure they do something for their own country. We have a shift to the right internationally.” This applies to Trump as well as Orbán and other politicians.
