End the war quickly? – Trump has these plans for Ukraine

Date:

The people around US President-elect Donald Trump already have different ideas for future Ukraine policy. Trump announced during the election campaign that he wanted to end the war quickly, but left it unclear how he would do so.

The Wall Street Journal now reported that the Ukrainian government must pledge not to join NATO for the next 20 years. In return, the US would continue to supply the country with weapons. The plans also include a demilitarized zone along the front, the report said, citing people in the know. It is still unclear who should be stationed there for surveillance. American troops would not be available for this. They should be European troops, a member of the Trump team said.

Frontline jammed
Russian authorities currently occupy about a fifth of Ukrainian territory. Outgoing President Joe Biden had promised the embattled country sufficient support until the country can repel Russian aggression. The White House has so far been Kiev’s main supporter and arms supplier.

The front line is currently at a relative stalemate; Russian troops hold the territories they conquered. Biden’s Democrats fear that Trump could force Ukraine to make far-reaching concessions to end the war as announced (see video above).

No weapons without negotiations?
The Wall Street Journal reported that a proposal had also been made to force the Ukrainian government to negotiate by blocking arms deliveries. It is known that Trump is firmly against supporting Ukraine with billions more. The 78-year-old also still has personal contacts with Kremlin ruler Putin.

The West has a choice to continue financing Ukraine “and the destruction of the Ukrainian people, or to recognize the current reality and start negotiations,” Russian Security Council President Sergei Shoigu said.

Zelensky tried to limit the damage
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is now trying to limit the damage after Trump’s election victory. “We agreed to maintain close dialogue and promote our cooperation,” he said. In the past, Trump had described both Zelensky and Putin as “very good.”

Russian political scientist Konstantin Kalachov said Trump was “unpredictable.” He is an ‘affectively disturbed, emotional person who doesn’t want to lose.’ Therefore, it will not be easier for either party.
