Hope for Europe? – Trump nominates NATO champion as secretary of state

Date:

Donald Trump is now announcing new personnel decisions every hour, but this one is particularly important: the Republican is nominating Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. This is special in several respects.

“Marco is a highly respected leader and a powerful voice for freedom,” Trump said in a written statement. “He will be a strong advocate for our nation, a true friend to our allies and a fearless warrior who will never shy away from our adversaries.”

Rubio, 53, has been in the US Senate since 2011 and unsuccessfully tried to become a Republican presidential candidate in 2016. But he failed in the primary campaign against Trump. During this time the two men shared a deep enmity. Rubio called Trump a “cheater.” He denigrated him because of his height as ‘little Marco’.

However, Rubio quickly fell into line and has been one of Trump’s busiest campaigners this election campaign. It is said that he was even shortlisted for the vice candidacy before JD Vance, who has also been highly critical of Trump and once called him “America’s Hitler,” got the nod.

What positions does Rubio represent?
Rubio is the son of Cuban immigrants and would be the first Latino to hold U.S. state office. He recently voted against additional billions to support Ukraine, which was under attack by Russia. “I think the Ukrainians were incredibly courageous and strong when they stood up against Russia,” Rubio said in early November. “But ultimately we are financing a stalemate war that must end or the country will be set back 100 years.”

The Republican sees his main focus in other parts of the world: he is considered a pro-Israel hardliner and critic of Beijing. Rubio called China the biggest challenge to American foreign policy. In an op-ed published by The Washington Post in September, he called Beijing “the largest and most sophisticated adversary America has ever faced.” He is often referred to in the Chinese media as an ‘anti-China pioneer’.

Here again, he has repeatedly drawn attention to Ukraine in the past: “I think China would like us to be stuck in a conflict in Europe and not focus on what’s happening in the Indo-Pacific.”

Rubio supports the NATO alliance
The US senator from Florida is considered a supporter of NATO, but has adjusted his position to Trump over the years. He recently called for a “real alliance”. This means: Rubio wants to put pressure on member states to invest more in their national defense.

The 53-year-old is also in favor of a tough stance against Iran. Rubio called Tehran a “terrorist regime.” The “impending rise of an axis” led by China, Russia and Iran is the greatest geopolitical threat to the United States.

Even at a young age, Rubio was considered a promising newcomer to the Republican Party. Two years after receiving his law degree, his steep political career began in 1998 in the Miami City Council. With the support of the ultra-conservative Tea Party movement, he reached the Senate in Washington, where he has been a member since 2011.

In his 2012 memoir, “An American Son,” Rubio described how his cigar-smoking grandfather told him that the United States was a beacon for the world’s oppressed. He is now expected to serve in the Trump Cabinet, which is threatening mass deportations, especially of migrants from Latin America.
