After five years, WKStA discontinues the proceedings against Casinos Austria

Date:

After more than five years, the Public Prosecution Service for Economic and Corruption (WKStA) closes the procedure surrounding Casinos Austria (Casag): According to this information, the investigations against three members of the supervisory board due to allegations of breach of trust have been stopped.

According to the accusation in an anonymous complaint, you allegedly took the initiative to prematurely terminate two management contracts in connection with a new appointment of the board of directors.

Accusation: Politically motivated staff
Accordingly, the appointment of previous CFO Bettina Glatz-Kremsner to replace Peter Labak as CEO, Martin Skopek as operations director and Peter Sidlo as head of finance is said to be politically motivated. The personnel decision was agreed by then-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) and then-FPÖ President and Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache, the advertisement said.

WKStA: Accusation “could not be proven”
The investigations showed that the personnel decision was “at least objectively justified and justifiable,” the WKStA said in a press release. “The termination of the board’s contracts, which the advertisement claimed was purely party politically motivated, could not be proven.”

The sometimes extremely high severance payments are due to the old contracts. However, these could not be investigated criminally due to the statute of limitations. The WKStA attributes the duration of the investigation to various procedures surrounding Casinos Austria. It was necessary to identify possible links between the individual, extensive issues in the procedural complex. Only two years later – at the end of 2022 – was the WKStA able to evaluate individual data from house searches. Some of the suspects have been interrogated several times and approximately 70 witnesses have been questioned.
