Justice will tighten requirements for prison performances after the Muguruza concert

Date:

The goal of the Ministry of Justice is that ‘victims do not feel offended’. For his part, the singer has welcomed the decision with surprise, as he told EITB: “21 years ago, the Basque government made an institutional declaration in favor of freedom of expression.”

Fermin Muguruza’s concert in Martutene prison has caused a stir. The singer performed “Sarri, Sarri”. The Kortatu group composed this piece in 1985based on the escape from Martutene of ETA members Iñaki Pikabea and Joseba Sarrionandia.

The Ministry of Justice of the Basque Government has received a series of complaints and has decided to tighten the requirements for cultural performances to be offered in the correctional centers of the Basque Autonomous Community. “That the victims do not feel offended” is the objective of the department led by María Jesús San José.

Fermin Muguruza He received the decision with surprise. As he told EITB: “21 years ago that the Basque government has made an institutional statement in favor of freedom of expression, expressing solidarity with Medem for the censorship that the film La Pelota Vasca has undergone, and with Muguruza himself, precisely for the concerts that were suspended because of the song ‘Sarri, Sarri'”.

‘Sarri, Sarri’ was heard for the first time in Martutene prison on Saturday. The video recorded by the neighbors went viral and was spread by Fermín Muguruza himself, who claimed that they had “violated the curse of prohibition”.

After receiving several complaints, the Ministry of Justice has chosen to tighten the requirements for gaming in prisons. Sources from the María Jesús San José department claim to understand that “the victims may feel offended when they hear ‘Sarri, Sarri’.”

Therefore, from now on, all cultural activities in prisons must be in accordance with ‘the pledge not to offend victims’.

Until now the only restriction was going to a prison to play have no criminal record or police record. However, after receiving the complaints, the demands will increase.

“It will be requested that any cultural proposal must be accompanied by a commitment to respect values, contribute to the reintegration of prisoners and, most importantly, not to offend victims,” the sources emphasize.

In this sense, the Ministry of Justice regretted what happened this Saturday and therefore apologized to all the victims who felt offended after listening to the song ‘Sarri, Sarri’.
