77 people killed – 2nd attempt: mass murderer Breivik wants release

Date:

Convicted mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik is having a Norwegian court investigate for the second time whether he can be released early from prison under conditions. The right-wing extremist killed 77 people in two attacks in 2011.

The trial in Ringerike Prison, northwest of Oslo, starts at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. A total of three days of negotiations are scheduled until Thursday.

Most serious crime of the Norwegian post-war period
On July 22, 2011, Breivik committed the most serious crimes of Norway’s post-war period to date, first detonating a car bomb in Oslo’s government district, killing eight people.

He then committed a massacre on Utøya among the participants of the annual summer camp of the youth organization of the Social Democratic Workers’ Party. 69, mainly younger people, died on the island.

Breivik justified his actions with right-wing extremist and Islamophobic motives. In 2012, he was sentenced to the then maximum sentence of 21 years of preventive detention with a minimum term of ten years.

After this minimum term had expired, he checked whether he could be released on parole in early 2022. The Telemark district court responsible at the time rejected the request after a hearing lasting several days.
