Does he compete himself? – Doskozil sees a “historic opportunity” for the SPÖ

Date:

The recent massive decline in the approval of the current federal government in surveys is fueling long-circulating rumors of new elections. Should this happen, then Burgenland governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) sees a need for consultation within the party. In particular, he sees the issue of the top candidate as “unsolved”. When asked about the preferred coalition partners, however, he already has very concrete ideas.

Burgenland SPÖ boss and governor Hans Peter Doskozil spoke to the “press” after the next election against a grand coalition with the ÖVP and for a coalition with the Greens and NEOS. There is currently an ideal window of time for his subjects – around €1700 minimum wage and the employment of caring relatives, he is confident he can implement with a traffic light coalition too.

Top candidate “a difficult subject”
When asked if he would like to carry it out himself as Chancellor, he said: “It is a difficult subject. I hope that the Social Democracy will now recognize the historic opportunity it has. In terms of content, but also because of the internal problems of the ÖVP The SPÖ must now make the right personnel decisions and be ready to tackle such reforms.”

Federal party “way too reserved”
He rejected red-black for the future: “It is certainly very damaging if you now internally find favor with the ÖVP and put another grand coalition in the room. You have to be confident enough to say you want a new government that goes beyond the ÖVP. That can work. It shouldn’t be enough for us to somehow get a grand coalition together and then say: we’ve got a few functions again, that’s enough for us.”

The federal party and the Viennese SPÖ are “way too careful with a traffic light coalition. But traffic lights would be the future as far as I’m concerned.”

Will Christian Kern’s Own List Follow?
Turning to speculation about ex-chancellor and SPÖ leader Christian Kern, Doskozil said he certainly wouldn’t be averse to reshaping politics. “But I doubt he will make his own list. Politically, Christian Kern is a smart guy, and he has many functions. It would certainly be an asset to an economic-political profile of Social Democracy.”
