Opposition shocked: Argentinian President Milei is now also Italian

Date:

During his recent visit to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Argentina’s head of state Javier Milei was quickly granted Italian citizenship. The opposition doesn’t like this at all.

Milei, who is of Italian descent, is currently in Rome to meet Italy’s far-right prime minister and attend a festival organized by her post-fascist party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy). Both politicians maintain a close relationship: the Argentinian gave Meloni a statue of himself in this pose, referring to appearances during his election campaign in which the self-proclaimed ‘anarcho-capitalist’ wielded a chainsaw (see image below).

The granting of Italian citizenship to Milei – his sister also received citizenship – was sharply criticized by the opposition. She spoke of an “insult” and “intolerable discrimination” against the many people who would have to wait a long time for this step.

After all, foreign citizens must live in the country for ten years before they can even submit an application. Children born in Italy to foreign parents cannot apply for citizenship until they are 18 years old. Opposition parties and organizations such as Oxfam Italia have already called for the term to be shortened from ten years to five years, to catch up with countries such as Britain, France and Germany. However, Meloni’s governing coalition refuses to relax regulations.
