German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was in Syria on behalf of the EU to talk to the new leadership about resuming relations. She learned firsthand that women’s rights are in danger after the fall of the Assad regime and that, like in Afghanistan, they apparently should not be overlooked.
As RTL journalist Sergej Maier revealed, photos of her visit are being distributed in Syria in which she has been made unrecognizable.
Women? Unwanted!
According to the German news portal ‘ntv’, four photos of the diplomatic meeting appeared on a news channel called Almharar on Friday evening, in connection with Syria’s new rulers. Baerbock is digitally obscured in the images, while the French Foreign Minister can be clearly seen in the images. Two interpreters who helped with the conversations were also ‘erased’. Women? Unwanted!
Handshake refused upon arrival
It started when the foreign minister arrived: de facto ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa refused to shake Baerbock’s hand. Reason: probably religious views of the Islamist leadership.
“As soon as I arrived, it was clear to me that of course there would be no normal handshakes here,” she said diplomatically in response to a journalist’s question. But it was also made clear to the Islamist hosts that they disapproved of the practice, Baerbock said.
Above all, the conversation made it clear that women’s rights are an indicator of how free a society is, according to Baerbock. By the end of the conversation, a handshake no longer seemed so difficult. It was learned from delegation circles that al-Sharaa extended his hand again at the end of the conversation, but no more handshakes took place.
