The first blue-black federal government is ante portas. After the blue party leader Herbert Kickl gave the green light for negotiations with the ÖVP on Tuesday, ÖVP leader Christian Stocker now made his first statement. Stocker stated on Wednesday that he wanted to talk to Kickl, but was clearly committed to the EU and the fight against National Socialism.
Negotiations between the FPÖ and ÖVP continue to gain momentum. After Freedom Party Chairman Herbert Kickl had already sent his colleague Christian Stocker an invitation after the Blue Presidium the day before, the two were able to meet on Wednesday.
In an initial statement on Wednesday, Stocker confirmed he was in a “cool mind” and was available to speak to Kickl. The first substantive negotiations are apparently scheduled for Friday.
Stocker also explained in his statement that it was important to protect Austria’s sovereignty, unite European interests and conclude cooperation agreements. What is needed is partnership instead of isolation and remembering one’s own history and the struggle against National Socialism.
Party leaders want to be honest
Stocker wants ‘honest statements’ about these conditions in the conversation with Kickl. As is known, Kickl stated in advance that he wanted to “govern Austria in a fair manner”.
Stocker: “Now it’s a matter of deciding: should this country hold new elections or not? I am not afraid of elections, but I believe that it would be better for the country in a different way.” This is the only reason why he will now have the conversation with Herbert Kickl.
