Election victory annulled – Romania: mass demonstration for right-wing extremist candidate

Date:

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in the Romanian capital Bucharest for the defeated right-wing extremist and pro-Russian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu. The participants marched through the center and demanded, among other things, the resignation of incumbent President Klaus Iohannis.

The demonstrators also demanded that the Constitutional Court reverse its decision to nullify the first round of presidential elections in late November and order a new election. The right-wing extremist party AUR called for the demonstration.

That is why the elections were cancelled
Georgescu-Roegen surprisingly took first place in the first round of voting. The Constitutional Court justified the cancellation of the elections by saying that the entire electoral process was irregular. The court argued, among other things, that voters were manipulated by unlawful preferential treatment of a candidate on social media.

Georgescu-Roegen was previously a member of the far-right AUR, but resigned during the dispute. He represents pro-Russian positions, wants to end support for Ukraine by NATO country Romania, spreads conspiracy theories and glorifies the pre-1945 Romanian fascists known as the ‘Legionaries’.

The new presidential elections are scheduled for May 4. A possible second election is scheduled for May 18.
