The absolute majority that the SPÖ achieved in Burgenland in 2020 has been a thing of the past since Sunday. Nevertheless, Governor Hans Peter Doskozil is in the comfortable position of having three partners to choose from: the FPÖ, ÖVP and the Greens. And all three parties have already offered themselves as coalition partners. On Monday, Doskozil announced the program for the coming days.
Doskozil wants to decide next Monday with whom he will start government negotiations. This week he will hold initial talks with all parties represented in the state parliament and then discuss key issues internally on Saturday before announcing his decision, he announced in advance to a state party executive committee on Monday.
“Preliminary investigation”
As a kind of “preliminary reconnaissance” he will hold one-on-one talks with the top candidates of the ÖVP, FPÖ and the Greens in the coming days. “We are having conversations with everyone,” Doskozil said – including the Freedom Party.
The most important topics and future priorities will be determined during an internal exam on Saturday. The decision on a potential coalition partner will then be made on Monday.
SPÖ must reduce the government team
During Monday’s board meeting, he will discuss this procedure with his fellow party members and personnel discussions will probably also take place, Doskozil said upon his arrival. After all, the SPÖ now has fewer mandates and the government team will also be smaller because they have to make room for a coalition partner. He has not yet decided who this will affect. He said he could always trust his team and that they “worked well.”
ÖVP boss Sagartz remains in office despite the loss
The ÖVP also discussed the results of the state elections on Monday. Top candidate Christian Sagartz then made it clear that he would remain in office despite the loss. Interesting: Sagartz also mentioned his own federal party and its turn towards coalition negotiations with the FPÖ under Herbert Kickl as reasons for the election debacle.
