Chaos municipal councilor Ömer Öztas (24) wanted to infiltrate the Vienna Greens. About 100 followers would secure his re-election – now the two party leaders are drawing conclusions.
Expulsion proceedings are now underway by the Viennese Greens against the municipal councilor from Brigittenau, who is of Turkish descent. The accusations are serious: to secure his re-election, the 24-year-old allegedly brought his own followers into the party.
“He smuggled in about a hundred people, all of whom are now party members. Many of them have a Turkish background,” said a Green Party insider who wished to remain anonymous. Many people did not even know they were members of Ökos. Öztas is also said to have paid part of the membership fees (40 euros per year).
Then the city council with its supporters appeared in the state assembly in November 2024. It was already about the electoral procedure and the places on the list for the elections in Vienna. Öztas clearly wanted to secure a good place for himself so that he could get back into state parliament.
Every Green member who has been in the party for more than a year can vote. He is also said not to have taken his work as a well-paid political representative (8,231 euros gross per month) at the town hall very seriously. “His work leaves a lot to be desired. “He once arrived five hours late for a city council meeting because he overslept,” an insider told “Krone.”
Öztas: “This is the first time I hear about it”
The “Krone” was able to speak with Ömer Öztas on the sidelines of the city council meeting and confront him with the accusations. “This is the first time I’m hearing about it. There’s nothing wrong with promoting yourself, right?”
In response to a ‘Krone’ question, Barbara Obermaier, secretary of the Green state party, said: ‘I can confirm that the Vienna state leadership has received an application to revoke Ömer Öztas’ party membership. This application is currently under investigation. With regard to the valid party statutes, discussions include the illegal recruitment of people from competing parties (or membership of competing parties) and the payment of membership fees for third parties.
The state meeting of the Vienna Greens will take place on February 22, 2025. There, the final list for the municipal elections on April 27 will be chosen.
