Time now also runs for the middle -kingdom: a retired tree instead of a baby boom. China runs out to the children. India had already overtaken China with nearly 1.5 billion people in 2023. The consequences of the falling birth rate burden the Chinese economy. The aging progresses quickly. If a quarter of the population is older than 60 today, there will be two -thirds in 2035. At the end of the century, the Chinese population will have fallen from 1.4 billion to 800 million.
While state leader Xi Jinping lets the military muscles play, China fights with the consequences of a galloping aging of his population. This social problem is against other negative signals in the economy.
