Two lion babies were put asleep in the Cologne dear garden. The two animals were only born last week. The lion mother took too little for her babies, now the German zoo decided to end the life of the animals – and not to open them with the bottle.
Lion Mother “Gina” had not accepted the two babies – a woman and a man – a few days after birth, as De Keulen -Dierentuin announced on social networks on Monday. The two young animals were already “strongly invalid” and were put asleep to “save them unnecessary suffering”, as the zoo wrote.
Nothing has been left to leave the Asian lioness to her children. However, Gina preferred to take care of her older young animals, “who are not yet working at the age of 1.5 and still need a few months,” wrote the zoo on Instagram. Even the older young animals were not locked up. The mother did not accept the newborn lions.
Here you can see the Instagram contribution of Cologne Zoo:
“Gina” was absolutely rational from her point of view, “it said. Because the two lion babies were born much too early and the chances of survival were therefore very low. In nature a lion mother always takes care of the young people with the greatest opportunities for survival.
No raising with the bottle
The young animals also did not have to be raised with the bottle, “because this would lead to a misunderstanding of these lions on people,” said the zoo. This decision was made in advance and in coordination with the breeding program.
The zoo emphasized that lion babies in the wilderness have a very high death rate of 50 to 70 percent. “There is only one throw in the life of an adult Löwin on average,” wrote the zoo.
Criticism of animal rights activists
Nevertheless, there was criticism of the procedure. For example, biologist Yvonne Würz of the animal welfare organization PETA said: “Such cruel processes are not briefs, but sad daily life behind the walls of zoos. The death of the two lions is also incomprehensible in social networks.” Unfortunately, not understandable for me, “wrote a user.
The newspaper “Bild” even reported that the older young animals had to be transferred to other zoos in the fall. Then Löwin Gina is supposed to give birth to other lion babies.
German zoo wants to kill Paviane
In the last few days, the zoo in Nuremberg had noticed with a similar story: there you are considering killing a maximum of 20 pairs. Because too many animals live in a small space in the housing. Currently, more than 40 animals should live there, designed for 25. The zoo has so far not been able to accommodate the pavia elsewhere, as various media reported. It was very certain “that we have to remove animals,” said Dag Encke, the zoo director of the Nuremberg Tiergarten.
