The Second EU country – Denmark introduces military service for women

Date:

Denmark follows Norway and Sweden with the two Scandinavian countries and introduces military service for women. Danners who turned from July 1 to 18 years old after the July 1, from 2026 could be seized by the basic service.

In Denmark, conscription was so far only for men aged 18 and older. Even after innovations, only part of a year is mentioned. There is also a change for male citizens: Basic Military Service will be extended from four to eleven months from August 2026.

The change in the Danish military service takes place against the background of large geopolitical revolutions. The most important factors here are the Russian attack on Ukraine and the irregular foreign policy of US President Donald Trump.

The lower the distance from a country to Russia, the more intensive efforts to strengthen their own forces. The Russian threat is observed particularly intensively in the Baltic States, which used to be part of the Soviet Union. In Estonia, military service is mandatory for men and voluntary women. Latvia introduced the mandatory military service, which was only abolished two years ago in 2006. Nowadays there are more applicants than paid items among the armed forces.

Finland came to NATO
The former neutral NATO country Finland, which shares a long border with Russia, has never abolished the compulsory military service since the end of the Second World War. “This country experienced the invasion of its territory through the Red Army. Finns know what it means to have Russians in their field,” said Maxime Launay of the Institute for Strategic Research at the Military School in Paris in the past week.

The government of Poland drums volunteers together
From 2027, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wants 100,000 volunteers between 18 and 60 years old. About 35,000 people in Poland currently participate in similar military training every year.

Macron: “Back to military service not a realistic option”
The debate is controversial in France. President Emmanuel Macron recently admitted in an interview that the return to military service was “not a realistic option”. Instead, he wanted to look for ways to “mobilize citizens”. Until May, the government and the army must submit suggestions to be mobilized on how more young volunteers can be mobilized to support the armed forces if necessary. In a recently published study, 53 percent of the French spoke for re -introducing compulsory military service.

“Time Turn” in Germany
The German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius called a “change of safety” after the Russian attack on Ukraine. The biggest package of debt in the history of the country has recently been decided. The Bundestag approved a hollowing of the debt in favor of higher defense expenditure and enormous special assets for infrastructure.

In addition to the funds, army staff must also be increased. The traffic light government in Berlin (SPD, Greens, FDP) started plans by the Minister of Defense for a new military service shortly before the break at the end of the previous year. Among other things, they offer to write all young men and women to ask them about their willingness to serve the Bundeswehr. In this way, more young people must be recruited. However, Pistorius rejects a duty obligation.

The CSU Defense Politician Florian Hahn, on the other hand, recently called for the dismissal of the military service that has been exposed since 2011: “In 2025 the first conscripts must walk through the Barakpoorten,” he emphasized.
