The Italian government tightened the citizenship laws on Friday. So far, people have been able to fall back on Italian ancestors who lived after March 17, 1861. Foreign Minister Anionio Tajani complained that the system would be misused.
That is why only those people will receive Italian citizenship through origin, in which at least one parent or grandparent was born in the country. Between 2014 and 2024, the number of Italians who live abroad increased by 40 percent to 6.4 million. The climbs were mainly included in Brazil and Argentina.
Companies would earn a fortune to help people find their long forgotten Italian ancestors, Tajani said. They would also obtain the birth certificates that are necessary for the applications. Municipal offices in Italy and consulates are flooded with the requirements for documents.
“No bureaucratic issue”
“With all hardships we want to make money with the possibility of becoming Italian citizens,” Tajani said. In the future, all applications for citizenship will be processed directly in Rome. The costs for applying for Italian citizenship are currently 700 euros.
“Citizenship is not a bureaucratic issue, but the recognition of belonging to a culture, a tradition, to basic principles, which must mainly be demonstrated by command of language,” said the Forza Italia Government Party.
