Germany is about to have another government: as leaked on Tuesday evening, Christian and Social Democrats have agreed a fundamental coalition agreement. It’s only about subtleties, it said.
On Wednesday at noon, the Union and the SPD want to inform about the results, the Omroep NTV reported, quoted negotiators and was generally agreed. In the evening there was a breakthrough. Now only subtleties would be discussed.
“It should go fast”
Given the international situation, the negotiators had felt pressure for a quick conclusion of their conversations. “It should go fast, it should be good,” said CDU politician Jens Spahn on Tuesday before the start of the discussion round in Berlin.
The Saarland prime minister Anke Rehlinger (SPD) saw the negotiators on the right track. “The last few meters are the most strenuous, but I am sure the effort will be worth it,” she said for the Konrad-Aadauer-Haus.
CDU/CSU depending on SPD for majority
The CDU/CSU with candidate for Chancellor Friedrich Merz had won the election of the Bundestag on 23 February. With a voice of 28.5 percent, however, it depends on the SPD for a majority that can be managed. After signing the coalition agreement, the Bundestag would meet for the Chancellor’s elections, presumably at the end of April or early May.
